Sir Matt Busby

Matt Busby joined United as manager on the 15th February 1945. The former Liverpool and Manchester City half back had enjoyed a fine career at club level and international level for Scotland.

Sir Matt was first offered a three year contract but demanded a five year contract to allow him time to rebuild the squad. Sir Matt appointed ex-welsh international, Jimmy Murphy as chief coach. When Sir Matt took over as manager he inherited a squad which included Irish international Johnny Carey, club captain Jack Rowley, inside forward Johnny Morrison and centre-half Stan Pearson. Sir Matts first buy wass experianced winger Jimmy Delaney from Celtic for �5000.

The first official season after the war was 1946-1947 and United finished runners up behind Liverpool. The following season United finished runners up again. The same season United won the FA cup for the second time in their history. United beat Blackpool 4-2 in the final, which is still regarded as a classic final. United finished runners up in the 1950-1951 season and the following season finally won the ultimate prize. It was Uniteds first championship for 41 years.
